GSM Cell Phone
GSM means Global System for Mobile communications, developed in the European Telecommunications Standards Institute created the standard and the first commercial operation started in 1991. The United States has also accepted the GSM system.
Not all cell phone companies in the United States use the GSM cell phone system. Carriers like Sprint, Verizon and Virgin Mobile use the CDMA standard. A CDMA cell phone will not work on a GSM cell phone system. If you are planning to travel into rural areas oftem or live in a rural area it is a good idea to see if CDMA standards are available in your area.
GSM systems tend to cover more of rural areas. The big advantage to a GSM cell phone is that many GSM carriers have roaming contracts with other carriers that use the GSM system which costs the cell phone user much less when traveling.
